Court does not have the authority to issue an order banning animal slaughter, the Chilaw District Court stated today taking up the petition filed over the animal sacrifice at the annual feast of the Munneswaram Kali Kovil.
However, it said, under section 17 of the Animal Slaughter Act the police department is able to take legal action if any illegal animal slaughter is taking place.
The plaintiff’s attorney, speaking to Ada Derana, stated that this order rejects the existing opinion that animal slaughter can be carried out as a religious right.
He further stated that, in other words if animal slaughtering is to be carried out in the future It is compulsory to obtain proper permits and that if any religious animal sacrifice or animal slaughter is carried out without a proper permit, the police will be able to take action against it under the Animal Slaughter Act.
